Fulham vs Stoke City: Match Preview

Posted on February 22, 2013  by Matt  in Match Previews   No Comments »

It’s been a tough winter for Stoke fans; heavy defeats against Manchester City, Chelsea and Swansea came during an 8-game run without a victory. This ended in our last outing at the Britannia Stadium against Reading; for our last away win, you have to go back to the first day of December, and a 1-0 victory against West Brom.

As is becoming the norm, our away form has been pathetic this season, and only our home form appears to be saving us from a relegation scrap. Fulham, meanwhile, aren’t doing too badly in current form – though Jol’s men sit below us in the league, trailing us by four points.

It’s unlikely there will be many goals in this game; the Potters are struggling to score although have been conceding freely as of late. Meanwhile, Fulham have also been struggling to score, but have themselves a tight solid defensive line.

Stats – Provided by EA Sports Player Performance Index

-  Fulham played out a disappointing draw with Norwich last time out, a 0-0 draw the end result on a day when both sides seemingly struggled to break the deadlock.

Sascha Reither is doing all he can to help his case for a longer contract come the end of the season. The right back has been producing some excellent displays for Martin Jol’s side and has earned a 76.7% tackle success rate from 60 attempted challenges, as well as 83 interceptions and 12 blocks.

- The versatile German has also been proving his mettle in attack, providing 45 crosses, a squad-high, and completing 400 passes in the opponent’s half this season according to the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index.

Damien Duff has been rolling back the years at times this season, proving he still has more than enough quality to compete in the upper echelons of the Premier League. He’s provided more assists than any other Fulham player with 7, as well as chipping in with 3 goals.

Hugo Rodallega continues to turn in some solid performances up front for Martin Jol’s side this season. Whilst his strike partner Dimitar Berbatov continues to grab the headlines for the Cottagers, it is the Colombian who has the strongest accuracy rate in the squad for players with more than 13 attempts on goal, with 67.4%. Rodallega is 2/1 to score at any time this weekend with 888sport.com.

Stoke claimed a deserved 2-1 victory over Reading thanks to a Robert Huth header and a ferocious strike from Cameron Jerome.

-  Although not a player who often garners headlines, Glenn Whelan has been one of Tony Pulis’ most consistent performers this season. He’s contributed 5 assists and 24 crosses as well as completing a pass in the opponent’s half once every 5.8 minutes.

- No Stoke player has been more willing to provide a consistent threat on goal than Jonathan Waltersthis season. He’s racked up 35 attempts on goal, although only 46% have been on target. You’ll find Walters 11/4 to score at any time on 888sport.com.

Matthew Etherington will be looking for more end-product from his final ball as we move into the business-end of the season. He’s provided 30 crosses this campaign, more than any other Stoke player, but has yet to register an assist.

- Although always key in a defensive context for Stoke, Robert Huth’s reading of the game will need to be at its best this weekend to cope with the deceptive movement of the Fulham front line. All signs suggest that the big German has the ability contain Berbatov and co though, as he leads the Stoke squad for interceptions with 148 according to the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index.

Stoke City vs Reading

Posted on February 08, 2013  by Matt  in Match Previews   No Comments »

Tomorrow sees a potentially massive game for the Potters; there could not be a better time to turn around our run of bad form, and at home against one of this season’s new-boys.

Reading have performed well since Christmas having underperformed before the winter period – the complete reversal of Stoke, who have let slip a great run of results with some nightmarish results.

Stoke came within 12 minutes of holding Arsenal in their last Premier League game, before losing out to a deflected Lukas Podolski free kick.

- Up until then Asmir Begovic had been in inspired form to keep the Gunners out. He’s made 130 saves this season, the 5th highest so far this season in the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index.

- Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross has been putting his body on the line for Stoke this season, and has made the third highest number of blocks in the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index with 27. Team mate Robert Huth is in 7th with 22.

- Stoke winger Matt Etherington has been unlucky with his deliveries this season, he has delivered 29 crosses without being credited an assist, more than any other midfielder in the league.

Reading have made a habit of late winners recently, taking ten points from twelve in their last four games. Their latest victims were Sunderland, with Jimmy Kebe scoring both goals in a 2-1 win.

Kebe’s goals took his tally for the season to five, from an efficient 16 efforts at goal with 68.8% on target. In fact, of the players in the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index to have scored five or more goals Kebe has needed the fewest shots per goal, with an average of 3.2 shots for each goal scored. He’s also 11/2 to add to his goal tally at any time this weekend with 888sport.com.

- Team mate Adam le Fondre has the fifth best shots per goal ratio in the league, averaging 3.6 shots for each of his ten goals this season, making them one of the most dangerous strike pairings in the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index.

- In the middle of the park, Jem Karacan is one of only 16 players in the league to have attempted 25 or more tackles while still maintaining a 75% + success rate for tackles won. Karacan has won 77.1% of the 35 he has attempted.

Ian Harte is undergoing a renaissance of form this season at Reading, and delivered 9 crosses against Sunderland. Only Leighton Baines delivered more in the last round of games with 10

- New signing Hope Akpan has made the step up to Premier League football seamlessly for Reading, contributing 3 assists in 3 appearances at an average of one every 48 minutes 20 seconds.

Saturday 12th January

Stoke v Chelsea 15:00

- Stoke haven’t had a great start to 2013, with a 3-0 loss at the hands of Man City in the league and a 0-0 draw in the FA Cup against Crystal Palace. One highlight, however, will be the signing of a new contract by Ryan Shawcross.

- Shawcross has attempted 53 tackles this season, winning an impressive 64.2% of them, and made 110 interceptions, making him the 9th most effective defender in the league when you combine tackles won, interceptions, clearances and blocks. That includes 23 blocks, the second highest in the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index.

- Stoke have looked impressive in defence this season and have conceded just 20 goals, a return bettered only by Chelsea and Man City. They have conceded just 7 goals at home, the best in the league. Part of that must go down to goalkeeper Asmir Begovic who has been in impressive form this season. Begovic has made 112 saves this season, the third highest number in the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index, and is the third ranked goalkeeper overall after England number 1 Joe Hart and Chelsea’s Petr Cech.

- Jonathan Walters has also been quietly impressing this season, and is the second highest ranked striker in the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index outside of the top 6 teams having contributed 5 goals and 3 assists this season from 30 shits at goal. Walters may need to sharpen up though, having hit just 13 of those 30 shots on target.

- Chelsea have had a difficult start to 2013, with a 1-0 defeat to West London neighbours QPR and a 2-0 league cup defeat to Swansea falling either side of a  5-1 thrashing of Southampton in the FA Cup.

- One highlight for Chelsea fans will be the seamless transition that new signing Demba Ba has made to the team. Ba scored twice on his debut in the FA Cup and looked dangerous when brought on against Swansea, so Stoke will need to watch out for the former Newcastle hitman. Ba is joint second in the race for the Premier League golden boot having scored 13 goals at a rate of one every 137 minutes, and coming from 81 shots at goal with 41 of those on target. In comparison, Luis Suarez and Michu, who are both also on 13 goals, have taken 140 and 141 minutes respectively to score their goals, and taken 104 and 54 shots to score them. 888sport.com have Ba at 20/1 to score a hat trick against Stoke.

- Ba will enjoy playing in front of a supremely talented Chelsea midfield. Juan Mata has been one of the stars of the season, and has contributed a goal or assist every 9 minutes 12 seconds this season, one of the best ratings in the league. Mata has completed 587 passes in the opposition half this season, the 6th highest in the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index and two places above team mate Eden Hazard who is in 8th with 531 passes completed.

- His midfield team mate Frank Lampard has been at the centre of most conversations around Chelsea this month with contract negotiations ongoing. Lampard has six goals in the Premier League this season, averaging one every 96 minutes 40 seconds, a rate only beaten by United’s Chicarito Hernandez which demonstrates his ongoing value as a goal scorer in the Premier League.

Stoke City manager Tony Pulis has just Rory Delap (hernia) and Mark Wilson (broken leg) absent for the visit of European Champions Chelsea.

The Potters boss may decide to recall the likes of Kenwyne Jones, Glenn Whelan and Asmir Begovic – who all missed the 0-0 FA Cup draw with Crystal Palace last time out.

Blues manager Rafa Benitez may look to shake things up after his side’s 2-0 defeat to Swansea in the first leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final, with Demba Ba and Frank Lampard contenders to return to the starting XI.

The Spaniard may be able to call on the services of captain John Terry (knee), after the 32-year-old made his return to action in a Chelsea development squad game on Thursday.

Victor Moses and John-Obi Mikel are away at the Africa Cup on Nations, whilst the game will come too soon for Petr Cech (groin). Oriel Romeu (knee) is out for the rest of the season.

DID YOU KNOW?
  • Stoke’s record at the Britannia Stadium is imperious – they are unbeaten in their last 17 Premier League home games.
  • The Potters are the only side in the top-flight not to have conceded a goal from outside of the penalty box this season.
  • Tony Pulis’ side have kept a clean sheet in 43% of their league matches this term.
  • Chelsea have not lost to Stoke in any competition for 37 years.
  • Blues’ midfielder Frank Lampard needs just one goal to go ahead of club legend Kerry Dixon in the all-time scoring chances. They are currently tied on 193 strikes each.
  • Out-of-sorts Spain striker Fernando Torres had just 19 touches of the ball in the 80 minutes he played in Chelsea’s last game – which was his 100th appearance for the Stamford Bridge club.
