It’s been five years since these two teams met, and after this game it’ll be less than 10 days until they next meet.

Despite making several changes following on from their 3-0 loss at the Etihad Stadium, Pulis’ side came away from Selhurst Park without making the fatal mistake of seeing a lower league team as easy prey.

West Brom’s excellent run of four straight wins came to an end on Wednesday, with the Baggies falling to defeat against battling Swansea.  The home side remain a force to be reckoned with though, and are level on points with third-placed Chelsea:

-      Romelu Lukaku scored again in the midweek defeat, bringing his season tally to five.  His 83.3 percent shooting accuracy rate (20 shots on target from 24 attempts) is excellent, and the Belgian is the only player on the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index with at least 20 goalbound efforts to have maintained a rate of 80% or more.

-      Claudio Yacob looked solid against Swansea, and has made 35 winning tackles so far this season.  Only three league players have made more, and Yacob’s tally of 24 lost tackles is lower than them all.

-      The EA SPORTS Player Performance Index shows the Baggies to be the only side to lose midweek despite covering more ground than their opponents, and manager Steve Clarke will be telling his team to let the ball do more of the work at the weekend.

-      In all competitions this season, the Baggies have only failed to find the net once, they are the only team in the entire league other than Everton who can boast this record, and will be looking to score early against Stoke.

Stoke’s home results this season have been incredible, with the side taking fifteen from a possible twenty-one points.  If they can replicate this form on the road, the Potters will be strong contenders for a European place:

-      Asmir Begovic almost cost his side the points on Wednesday with an unfortunate blunder, but remains the league’s best performing keeper this season.  According to the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index, the Bosnian stopper has saved 75 of the 87 shots on targets he’s faced, notching up an unmatched 86.2 percent success rate.

-      Stoke were one of only two Premier League teams to win in midweek despite covering less total distance than their opposition, covering 63.9 miles compared to their Newcastle’s 65 miles.

-      Cameron Jerome scored his side’s late winner on Wednesday, and will be hoping to get more time on the pitch in the next few matches.  He’s only played 96 minutes this season, making eight successful passes and five attempts on goal according to the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index.

-      Stoke’s win extended their unbeaten home record this season to seven matches, an even more impressive run considering the Potters have only let in two goals at the Brittania. West Brom may well be relieved to be playing at home at the weekend.

Stoke City vs Newcastle United

Stoke City vs Newcastle United

Stoke head into tonight’s game against Newcastle on the back of a steady if not outstanding win against Fulham over the weekend. Meanwhile, the Magpie’s confidence will no doubt have been knocked after their lacklustre performance on the south coast on Sunday as they lost 2-0 to Premier League returnees Southampton.

Last season, Newcastle showed great tenacity and organisation – and played well against the Potters. Indeed, few would argue that the team from the Tyne were last season Stoke’s toughest opponents at the Britannia – a compliment indeed, given the results that Stoke achieved on their home soil.
It remains to be seen whether this season is any different.

EA Sports PPI Stats

Stoke City won yet again at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday, a stadium that has become one of the league’s most reliable fortresses.  With the mid-table teams so close, every point the Potters can pick up will be extremely valuable:

-      Zero defeats, one goal conceded and twelve points is a superb home record from Tony Pulis’s men this season- Newcastle are yet to win on the road, so the stats appear to bode well for the Potters.

-      Robert Huth is in the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index team of the week after a strong showing against Fulham.  The German is currently in the top 15 best performing defenders over the course of the whole season, the only representative from the bottom half of the table.  He’s won 19 of the 40 tackles he’s gone in for this season, just under 50 percent.

-      Ryan Shawcross was another defensive rock against Fulham, and has made 16 blocks so far this season- only QPR’s Ryan Nelsen has made more with 17.

-      Jonathan Walters was also excellent for Stoke last weekend, covering 6.77 miles.  Not a single Fulham player managed to reach 6.3 miles, and Walters’ high work rate will be critical on Wednesday.

-      Charlie Adam scored the winner against Fulham on Saturday to become the third Stoke player with two goals to his name this season.  He’s notched up ten shots on target this season, with eleven off his efforts heading off target.

An inconsistent run of form has dented Newcastle’s bid to repeat their strong fifth-place last season, but eight points from a possible fifteen at the start of the current campaign proves the team is capable of putting together a string of results- they’ll be aiming to become the first side to win at Stoke this season:

-      Newcastle appeared to miss Hatem Ben Arfa against Southampton, and will be looking forward to his return from injury in December.  The Frenchman is the best dribbler in the league according to the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index, with 26 successful attempts at an average of just over one every 44 minutes.

-      Tim Krul was on sensational form against Southampton last weekend, pulling off a string of saves to keep the score down.  His selection rival Steve Harper has also proved himself this year however, coping well with being the league’s fourth busiest keeper. With almost one save every 14 minutes according to the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index, the veteran will be keeping Krul on his toes (Krul has made 52 at a rate of just under one every 17 minutes).

-      The Magpies recorded more possession than their opponents for the third consecutive game on Sunday.  Keeping the ball away from Stoke may frustrate the side, who are used to depriving away opposition of the ball at the Britannia.

-      71.4 percent of Newcastle’s league points have come at home so far, with no wins away from home heading into a match against a team that are yet to lose at home.  Football can be a strange game however, and Newcastle’s determination to end a run of three defeats may have more bearing on the outcome than the statistics.

Pennant joins Wolves

Pennant joins Wolves

Stoke midfielder Jermaine Pennant has today signed a three month loan deal with Wolverhampton Wanderers, after failing to make an impression so far this season.

The former Arsenal and Liverpool winger had seemingly fallen down the pecking order at the Britannia Stadium, after an apparent falling out with boss Tony Pulis in the middle of last season.

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey claimed Pennant was a great addition to the Molineux outfit given their recent injury crisis, and suggested a dealer be struck in January which extends the deal – possibly into a permanent transfer.
